Chapter Nineteen
The doorway led to a narrow staircase, a passageway just wide enough for a golem to move through. Magda led the way as the group followed it, the stairs turning on themselves several times so that they dug upwards in a shaft. At their end was another stone door, and from the length of time it had taken it was obvious that the exit was shallower than the depth the first staircase had descended the group to. Wherever it came out, it wasnât the surface.
âReady?â Magda said, putting her hand on the door.
âI donât see why not,â Imelda said. âWeâre not expecting anything dangerous on the other side, right?â
âWell, the golem did warn us that we needed to see the duellists guild here first. He implied that not being registered is illegal in Dverger society. Honestly, thatâs a rather pragmatic stance to take, a deck is somewhat of a dangerous weapon. Requiring registration is wise.â Sarkuran pushed past Imelda and put his hand on the door, leaning over Magda as he did. âWith that said I feel that weâre not in any true danger.â
âWhat about me?â Tax said. Whilst her kind had acclimated to life amongst the humanoids back at the tower the same wasnât true of the Dverger. She was worried they might take one look at her and decide she was a monster who had wandered into the hold.
âYouâll be fine,â Magda said, turning towards her friend. She leant down and tapped the rune that had been etched into Taxâs crystal. It was the same Eternal rune that had been tattooed across the entire refugee population, an arcane sigil that provided the power to understand and speak any language. It was what let Tax and her kind interact with everyone else. âAs soon as you start talking, theyâll see youâre a person. Weâre already a bunch of foreigners, who look weird. Youâre not any stranger than a woman who is part lizard or someone who is like a weird lanky Dverger.â
âPerhaps the first time since youâve gotten your mortal frame you could reasonably be considered tall,â Sarkuran muttered. Magda had barely a headâs height over the one Dverger she had met so far.
Imelda tilted her head to one side. âPart lizard?â
âYou know what I mean, weâre not exactly a normal bunch, not to the Dverger anyway.â
âI appreciate what youâre trying to do,â Tax said, âbut youâre at least shaped the same as them. I didnât really consider this when I came but they might not react well to my presence.â
âYouâll be fine, the golem wasnât concerned, was it?â Magda said. If anything, Seventeen had barely registered Taxâs presence. âHuh, maybe he thought you were like him? That you were a golem of some kind.â
âMaybe. I have to be honest, you all acted like Seventeen was some kind of machine, but heâs not, heâs a person,â Tax said. âWhatâs with that?â
âWell, thatâs how he wanted to be treated, right?â Imelda said. âWe did say we thought he was a dwarf, and he claimed he wasnât.
