Chapter Nineteen

The doorway led to a narrow staircase, a passageway just wide enough for a golem to move through. Magda led the way as the group followed it, the stairs turning on themselves several times so that they dug upwards in a shaft. At their end was another stone door, and from the length of time it had taken it was obvious that the exit was shallower than the depth the first staircase had descended the group to. Wherever it came out, it wasn’t the surface.

“Ready?” Magda said, putting her hand on the door.

“I don’t see why not,” Imelda said. “We’re not expecting anything dangerous on the other side, right?”

“Well, the golem did warn us that we needed to see the duellists guild here first. He implied that not being registered is illegal in Dverger society. Honestly, that’s a rather pragmatic stance to take, a deck is somewhat of a dangerous weapon. Requiring registration is wise.” Sarkuran pushed past Imelda and put his hand on the door, leaning over Magda as he did. “With that said I feel that we’re not in any true danger.”

“What about me?” Tax said. Whilst her kind had acclimated to life amongst the humanoids back at the tower the same wasn’t true of the Dverger. She was worried they might take one look at her and decide she was a monster who had wandered into the hold.

“You’ll be fine,” Magda said, turning towards her friend. She leant down and tapped the rune that had been etched into Tax’s crystal. It was the same Eternal rune that had been tattooed across the entire refugee population, an arcane sigil that provided the power to understand and speak any language. It was what let Tax and her kind interact with everyone else. “As soon as you start talking, they’ll see you’re a person. We’re already a bunch of foreigners, who look weird. You’re not any stranger than a woman who is part lizard or someone who is like a weird lanky Dverger.”

“Perhaps the first time since you’ve gotten your mortal frame you could reasonably be considered tall,” Sarkuran muttered. Magda had barely a head’s height over the one Dverger she had met so far.

Imelda tilted her head to one side. “Part lizard?”

“You know what I mean, we’re not exactly a normal bunch, not to the Dverger anyway.”

“I appreciate what you’re trying to do,” Tax said, “but you’re at least shaped the same as them. I didn’t really consider this when I came but they might not react well to my presence.”

“You’ll be fine, the golem wasn’t concerned, was it?” Magda said. If anything, Seventeen had barely registered Tax’s presence. “Huh, maybe he thought you were like him? That you were a golem of some kind.”

“Maybe. I have to be honest, you all acted like Seventeen was some kind of machine, but he’s not, he’s a person,” Tax said. “What’s with that?”

“Well, that’s how he wanted to be treated, right?” Imelda said. “We did say we thought he was a dwarf, and he claimed he wasn’t.
